BLACK MIRROR Series Review -
British series available on Netflix and which I have really enjoyed and that is "Black Mirror".
"Black Mirror" is an anthology series so
each episode is completely different, with a different setting, a different
cast, different themes. Although there are many easter eggs throughout the
whole series that make us understand that there probably is a connection
between all the episodes and they're probably all set in the same universe.

For example the characters watch the same TV series, when they enter social media we see tweets referring to other episodes, there are recurring symbols in different situations.
The series was created by Charlie Brooker and it has horror, science fiction and thriller elements. In each episode "Black Mirror" analyzes dark and often satirical aspects of our modern society, with particular attention to the development of technology, how we will become nearly dependent from it and in general how it will influence our life in the near future.
The title "Black Mirror" refers to the screens of our devices so mobile phones, computer screens, TV screens and so on. Some of the episodes are set in a distant future for example the episode "San Junipero", other episodes are set in a frightening close future which shows how our society could become in just a matter of years, with our total dependence to the media and technology, our constant need to be updated and stimulated.
So as Brooker called it: "The way we might be living in 10 minutes if we are clumsy". The series consists of three seasons for a total of twelve episodes. We have episodes about politics, police investigations, talent shows, blackmailing, war, scientific experiments and love. The characters usually live in a dystopian world in which technology has advanced helping people with their daily activities.
The problem is that people have become totally dependent from technology and in particular from social media. For example in the episode "Nosedive" everybody is ranked with a number from one to five given by fellow members on social media. There are privileges with this number, people are excluded from some situations because of this. It's sort of a social status because of what you post online or how you behave.
So everybody becomes extremely fake. Another common feature between the characters in the different episodes of "Black Mirror" is the fact that technology has become literally a part of their body. So we have chips implanted in the brain, we have implants that allow eyes to film what they're seeing and feed it directly to other people, our consciousness can be directly uploaded into a cloud.
So technology is not separate from us, technology becomes part of the human body. This has some positive aspects because we're helped throughout our daily activities, for example passing through security at the airport is much safer and faster, or for example police investigations can become much more easy.
But as you can imagine people can become very paranoid and vindicative and use their technology against friends, loved ones and enemies. For example as we now block people on social media online, in the future in "Black Mirror" you can block people in real life, or you can check footage filmed years before from your eyes and relive certain moments or blackmail people as shown in the episode "Shut Up And Dance".

This episode, "Shut Up And Dance" shows how dark "Black Mirror" can be because the three seasons often cover topics like murder, pornography, vengeance, holocaust, perversion and it shows everything in such a realistic way, it shows situations which are so common to us that often it's frightening not because of how gruesome the scene we're seeing is, but because we realize how close it is to how we are living now. We feel nearly guilty of what we're seeing because it's set in a matter of years from now.
Some of the situations could actually happen right now. Often we give for granted the fact that technology is always available. Actually we can't seem to get enough of it, we have to constantly be stimulated, we constantly have to see something new. The violence in this horror film was boring, already heard this, already seen that.
And so we become dependent from technology we never have enough
of it and we start to abuse of it. And this is what happens in "Black
Mirror": soldiers have chips implanted in their brains to allow them to
perform better on field, but with what consequences? People are given the
possibility to judge people and watch them be punished, friendships are torn
apart, love stories end, entire nations are put at risk just because of the
greed of the people.
My favourite episodes are probably "White Christmas", "Shut Up And Dance" and "Nosedive". The episode I probably liked least was probably "The Waldo Moment". I really hope there will be a fourth season. For now we only have the possibility of the episode "The Entire
History Of You" becoming a film produced by Warner Bros. and Robert Downey Jr.'s production company. Let me know what you thought about "Black Mirror" with a comment here below.
